Chapter 4: After school graduation
Traineeship
A definition on traineeships used at EU level is: a limited period of work practice, whether paid or not, which includes learning and training component, undertaken in order to gain practical and professional experience with a view to improving employability and facilitating transition to regular employment.

One of its aims is to provide young people with the skills needed to enter the labour market and to facilitate the process. In turn, it is also a way for employers to assess the capabilities of new recruits before offering them permanent positions.

Traineeships vary in type, focus, duration, and range from short term work placements to longer term schemes linked to education.

Traineeships are currently unregulated in some Member States and sectors and, where regulation exists, it is very diverse and provides different quality elements or different implementing practices. The value of traineeships in easing the transition to employment depends on their quality in terms of learning content and working conditions.

In order to improve the quality of traineeships, in particular as regards learning and training content and working conditions, with the aim of easing the transition from education, unemployment or inactivity to work the Council of the European Union have stated a set of principles for a Quality Framework for Traineeships aimed at European Member States. It in particular calls on Member States to ensure that national law or practice respects the principles set out in the guidelines, and to adapt their legislation where necessary.

This part is relevant because it helps and motivates professional teachers to help students discover themselves and find the right workspace. This is relevant because the lack of motivation is characterized by not only students but also teachers. It is relevant, clearly presented and structured.

I would like to highlight another important key role of the company tutor who can help the student identify his/her professional profile. Supporting the student during all the internship lifetime, the company tutor can help the student become aware of his/her strengths and weaknesses, which is one of the most difficult tasks for the student!

This module focuses on students’ transition from school to work by defining the relation between school and work in terms of what their offer and what problems that may arise. The module provides teachers and counsellors with tools and mechanisms available for young people to make a successful and smooth transition from school to work. The module also gives information about the most wanted professional profiles on the European job market as well as about the transversal skills that companies and recruiting services take into consideration when selecting human resources. Teachers and counsellors can find great examples that they can use with their students.
