NAME OF THE JOB PROFILE:
Electrician-fitter
Description of the job profile
The electrician-fitter builds, renovates, modifies, repairs and maintains electrical installations (such as wires, cables, conduits, accessories, lighting devices, etc.) used for heating, lighting and power supply of various electrical appliances.
Their role is to set up the network of cables that distributes current (tubing, wiring, ducts, cable trays ...) and to carry out the connection of various equipment and components on different supports. They should then assemble the appropriate equipment in order to perform the installation of the elements and the proper wiring. In some cases, particularly in the context of the manufacture of electrical control cabinet, the electrician may be required to achieve and / or bond various substrates on which components are set. When the installation is complete, they should proceed to a series of tests, adjustments and any changes, element by element, before powering. A new testing phase is carried out, this time under tension, before completing the installation. The next step is the drafting of a comprehensive technical report with the plans, diagrams and information in order to communicate accurately all relevant information to their superiors, customers or colleagues in the maintenance service. In some cases, they may be responsible for conducting some activities of maintenance or modifications to the installation.
They perform all the tasks according to plans and specifications in order to ensure safe facilities that meet the industry and construction’s standards.
Depending on their specialty, the electrician can work in the residential, industrial or tertiary fields. If there is no fundamental difference in practice, regulation differs slightly from one sector to another. Thus, the service sector is more regulated than the residential one, for example. Similarly, facilities and equipment are not exactly the same.
Due to the constant evolution of technologies, new skills are necessary in the fields of telecommunication, home automation, intercom and videophone systems, CCTV, renewable and alternative energy (solar panels, windfarms…).

Qualifications required
Many schools in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation offer full time education courses for “electricians fitter-mechanics”
IFAPME (sandwich course for self-employed and small and middle-sized enterprises) also offers a course for “electrician”, both in learning (3 years) and in the Entrepreneur (2 years) sector. As for the full-time education, offers of alternating training are available in Wallonia.
Not only IFAPME; but also a dozen of CEFA centres (Education Centres and Training Alternation) organise trainings in electricity in Brussels and Wallonia.
Those trainings associate general and technical training with practical training in a company. A pedagogical team guides and supports the student in all the aspects of their project. Same modules as in full-time education.
About thirty education institutions of social promotion offer courses related to electrical jobs.
Forem-Training (employment and training agency) provides full time training for electricians. This qualified training consists of 1,040 lessons of 60 minutes each. The training program is divided into four modules apt to acquire the expected skills in the field for the job-market: installing assistant, fitters, building comfort; home automation, structured networks. In order to meet all the changes of this profession, many centres also offer additional training in home automation or in solar photovoltaic (design and/or installation). These courses are open to job seekers, workers, teachers and students.
