Roofer
Description of the job profile
The roofer is a skilled worker with the following tasks: making and renovating traditional and metallic roof covering. Installing isolation roof accessories. Installing solar panels.
In details:
- Installing the roof complex (sub roof, airtightness film, isolation)
- Making different traditional or metallic roof covers
- Installing rainwater evacuation systems and their support
- Installing and waterproofing different roof elements (flashing, penetrations)
- Making several types of cladding
- Installing roof equipment (solar panels, lightning rods, antennas)
- Disposing existing roof elements and carrying out simple structure works during transformations and renovations
- Participating in the supplying of materials to construction sites and installing specific machines and equipment
- Participating in the organisation of collective and individual security on the construction site in accordance with the security-hygiene-environment plan.
This is a varied work that requires appropriate tools and installation techniques and that offers a lot of work possibilities.
The roofer practices under the responsibility of a superior, in a team of workers with the same job or in a multidisciplinary team.
This work is complementary with that of damp-proofer (professional who puts proofing products or coating to damp proof construction elements such as roofs, terraces, cisterns, tanking, bridge decks…).
The work is mostly outdoor, on construction or renovation sites. It involves travelling from the company office or from a supplying location to the construction site.
Private companies are the main employers of roofers. They are often specialised in metallic or non-metallic covering. Many roofers are also self-employed entrepreneurs.

Qualifications required
Vocational upper secondary, fully accredited education, “construction” section.
They are few fully accredited institutions that train roofers in French-speaking Belgium.
Training can be achieved in other networks and channels:
- Sandwich course (in CEFA) that combines mainstream and technical education with a practice in a company. A pedagogical team accompanies, supports and guides the student in all the aspects of their project. Same modules as in fully accredited education.
- Sandwich course for self-employed and small and medium-seized enterprises (IFAPME), which proposes learning modules and management training.
- Forem (public service for employment and training in Wallonia) also provides training in eight centres throughout Wallonia. Trainees are trained for 26 weeks.
- Job seekers between 18 and 25, without a construction degree can be trained in a specific channel called RAC (“Régime Apprentissage Construction”).
- People above 18 who have learnt the job through practice can have their skills officially recognised through skill validation.
Installation as a self-employed worker is regulated. One has to meet the requirements of access to the profession. This access is ruled by the decree of the 29th of January 2007 regarding professional skills for roofing and damp-proofing activities
