Chapter 3 - School opportunities
What plans for the future?
Teacher should encourage the pupils to develop future educational and career plans and to explore realistic postsecondary options; help them to develop realistic goals. Graduating high school, pupils should contemplate various different academic options and directions. If a pupil is interested in higher education, he/she will need to prepare for an academic path beyond high school and will need some teacher’s support, help or advice in this process.

Even before pupil begins the higher education institution search, he/she needs to think about what would make higher education institution perfect match. In this stage teacher should ask pupils questions about the reasons for college or university path. Do they want to fulfil their dreams, have fun, meet new people, and exercise their mind? To answer this kind of questions, students should understand their strengths, weaknesses and interests.

Being in an educational institution search process, a pupil together with the teacher/ counsellor should consider questions about what type of post-high school program makes sense – vocational, college, university, the military, or other; what the pupil is looking for in the higher education institution, what is the most important in such institution for him/her, and what should be gained from the postsecondary education experience. The following aspects should be taken into account: location, flexibility, internationality, academic quality, scientific quality, admission requirements, academic staff proficiency, studies costs, graduates employability, institution status (college, university), financial and social support possibilities.

While giving advices and discussing about the future choices the teacher/counsellor should take into account that each pupils is unique. Recognize that pupils live in a complex time that is often highly competitive and a decision for educational path is of high importance for them and will have a great impact on their future lives. Teacher should listen with open mind, respect pupils’ choices and provide helpful, encouraging, and constructive feedback.

This section is very important because it gives all the tools to understand the pupils’ needs, the level of their skills, their dreams about a future job. For teachers it is also useful because it offers a series of tests to know and exalt the pupils’ potentialities. Teachers can also inform pupils about the concrete possibilities of working and living abroad.
The contents of the package are undoubtedly very useful, because they permit the deep knowledge of all the possibilities offered by the labour market.
In particular the “Job profiles section offers an exhaustive explanation of how the labour market requests new profiles or is modifying the existing ones., Finally it will be important to improve the section of test so students can start to think about their skills and aptitudes

The first module Understanding pupils highlights important theoretical psychological aspects which should be considered in order to understand and identify students’ personal aptitudes and characteristics; these aspects are useful when personalizing students’ education pathway towards the most suitable career and life style for them.
The last chapter strikes a balance between theory and practice by providing teachers and counsellors with best practices, experiences and success stories related to career planning, guidance and counselling.
